เสรีนิยมคลาสสิก

เสรีนิยมคลาสสิก (อังกฤษ: classical liberalism) เป็นอุดมการณ์ทางการเมืองและสาขาหนึ่งของเสรีนิยมที่สนับสนุนเสรีภาพของพลเมืองภายใต้หลักนิติธรรมโดยเน้นเสรีภาพทางเศรษฐกิจ โดยเกี่ยวข้องอย่างใกล้ชิดกับเสรีนิยมทางเศรษฐกิจ ซึ่งได้พัฒนาขึ้นในช่วงต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 โดยได้รับแนวคิดจากคริสต์ศตวรรษก่อน เพื่อตอบสนองต่อนคราภิวัตน์และการปฏิวัติอุตสาหกรรมในทวีปยุโรปและทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ

บุคคลเสรีนิยมที่มีชื่อเสียงซึ่งมีแนวคิดสนับสนุนลัทธิเสรีนิยมคลาสสิก ได้แก่ จอห์น ล็อก, ฌ็อง-บาติสต์ เซย์, ทอมัส โรเบิร์ต มาลธัส และเดวิด ริคาร์โด ซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องกับเศรษฐศาสตร์คลาสสิกโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งแนวคิดทางเศรษฐกิจที่อดัม สมิธ ได้นำเสนอในหนังสือความมั่งคั่งของประชาชาติเล่มหนึ่ง รวมทั้งความเชื่อในกฎหมายธรรมชาติ, ความก้าวหน้า และประโยชน์นิยม

ในฐานะคำศัพท์ เสรีนิยมคลาสสิกได้รับการนำมาใช้ในการหวนรำลึกเพื่อแยกความแตกต่างของเสรีนิยมในช่วงต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 ออกจากเสรีนิยมสังคม
