กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่มาจากภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ(ภาคอีสาน) ของประเทศไทย

คนอีสาน (ลาว: ຄົນອີສານ; พม่า: အီသန် လူမျိုး) หรือ ชาวอีสาน หรือ ชาวไทยภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ หรือ ชาวไทยภาคอีสาน เป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์-ภูมิภาคในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ("อีสาน")[3] ที่มีประชากรประมาณ 22 ล้านคน[2][4] ชื่ออื่น ๆ ของกลุ่มชนนี้ได้แก่ ไท(ย)อีสาน,[2][5] ไท(ย)ลาว,[6] ลาวอีสาน[2][7] หรือ อีสานลาว โดยอยู่ในกลุ่มชนชาวไทเหมือนกับคนไทยภาคกลาง (ชาวสยาม) และชาวลาว

ในความหมายกว้าง ๆ ทุกคนที่มาจาก 20 จังหวัดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนืออาจเรียกเป็น คนอีสาน ส่วนในความหมายแคบกว่า คำนี้สื่อเฉพาะผู้มีเชื้อชาติลาวที่เป็นประชากรส่วนใหญ่ในพื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่ของภูมิภาค หลังการก่อกบฏที่ล้มเหลวใน พ.ศ. 2369 ทำให้เกิดการบังคับถ่ายโอนประชากรผู้มีเชื้อชาติลาวจำนวนมากมายังภาคอีสาน หลังการแยกภาคอีสานออกจากอาณาจักรของลาวในอดีต การบูรณาการเข้ากับรัฐชาติไทยและนโยบาย"การแผลงเป็นไทย"ของรัฐบาล พวกเขาพัฒนาเอกลักษณ์ประจำภูมิภาคให้แตกต่างไปจากทั้งชาวลาวในประเทศลาวและชาวไทยในภาคกลางของประเทศไทย[3][8][9] การบูรณาการเอกลักษณ์นี้เข้ากับเอกลักษณ์ประจำชาติไทยเริ่มขึ้นประมาณ พ.ศ. 2443[10][11][12] แล้วเพิ่มความเข้มข้นมากขึ้นในช่วงสมัยฟาสซิสต์[13] ตลอดไปถึงช่วงสงครามเย็น[3] และยังคงมีอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ถึงแม้ว่าใน พ.ศ. 2554 ทางการไทยยอมรับอัตลักษณ์ลาวให้กับสหประชาชาติ[4][14] แม้แต่ในช่วงสูงสุดของสงครามเย็น ระดับการบูรณาการสิ่งนี้ยังคงอยู่ในระดับสูงมาก[3] โดยวัดจากการแสดงออกถึงความรู้สึกชาตินิยม[15] แม้แต่ปัจจุบัน ชาวอีสานเป็นหนึ่งในกลุ่มที่ชาตินิยมที่สุดในประเทศไทย ซึ่งมีความชาตินิยมมากกว่าชาวไทยภาคกลาง[16][17] ด้วยเหตุนี้ ในช่วงสูงสุดของ 'สงครามสี' ในประเทศไทยในช่วงปลายคริสต์ทศวรรษ 2000 ถึงต้นคริสต์ทศวรรษ 2010 กลุ่มเสื้อแดงที่มีฐานหลักในภาคอีสาน จึงมิได้เรียกร้องให้มีการแบ่งแยกดินแดน แต่เรียกร้องให้นำประชาธิปไตยกลับมาผ่านการสนับสนุนพรรคเพื่อไทย[18]

ผู้อยู่อาศัยเกือบทั้งหมดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของไทยมีสัญชาติไทย ถึงกระนั้นประชากรส่วนใหญ่ (ประมาณ 80%)[19] มีเชื้อชาติลาวและพูดสำเนียงหนึ่งของภาษาลาวตอนอยู่บ้าน (สำเนียงหลักของภาษาลาวสามภาษาที่พูดกันในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของไทยถูกสรุปเป็นภาษาอีสาน)[20] เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงทัศนคติแบบเหมารวมและการรับรู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคนที่พูดภาษาลาวแบบเสื่อมเสีย พวกเขาส่วนใหญ่จึงเรียกตนเองเป็น คนอีสาน[21][22]
