กลุ่มภาษาปาปัว เป็นกลุ่มของภาษาที่ใช้พูดในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกตะวันตกที่ไม่ใช่ตระกูลภาษาออสโตรนีเซียนและกลุ่มภาษาออสเตรเลียซึ่งเป็นการจัดกลุ่มที่ไม่ได้เน้นถึงความสัมพันธ์ทางด้านพันธุกรรมหรือภาษาศาสตร์ การรวมกลุ่มนี้ถูกตั้งขึ้นครั้งแรกโดย Sidney Herbert เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2435 โดยมีผู้พูดประมาณ 4 ล้านคน[1]

ลักษณะของภาษา แก้

กลุ่มภาษาปาปัวส่วนใหญ่ใช้พูดในบริเวณเกาะนิวกินี (ซึ่งถูกแบ่งเป็นประเทศปาปัวนิวกินีและจังหวัดปาปัวกับจังหวัดปาปัวตะวันตกของอินโดนีเซีย) นอกจากนั้น ยังมีผู้พูดในหมู่เกาะบิสมาร์ก เกาะบูเกนวิลล์ และหมู่เกาะโซโลมอนทางตะวันออก และในฮัลมาเฮรา เกาะติมอร์ และหมู่เกาะอาโลร์ทางตะวันตก ภาษาเมเรียม มิร มีผู้พูดตามแนวชายแดนของออสเตรเลีย ทางตะวันออกของช่องแคบทอร์เรส เป็นกลุ่มภาษาปาปัวเพียงภาษาเดียวที่ได้รับการยอมรับให้เป็นภาษาราชการในติมอร์-เลสเต

เกาะนิวกินีถือว่าเป็นบริเวณที่มีความหลากหลายของภาษามากแห่งหนึ่งของโลก นอกจากกลุ่มภาษาออสโตรนีเซียนแล้ว ยังมีภาษาเอกเทศอีกเกือบ 800 ภาษา ที่แบ่งเป็นกลุ่มย่อยๆ ได้เกือบ 60 กลุ่ม ที่ไม่มีความเกี่ยวข้องที่ชัดเจนกับกลุ่มภาษาอื่น กลุ่มของภาษาที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในบริเวณนี้คือกลุ่มภาษาทรานส์-นิวกินีที่ประกอบด้วยกลุ่มภาษาปาปัว ซึ่งพบในบริเวณที่สูงของเกาะนิวกินี การศึกษากลุ่มภาษาปาปัวทำได้ไม่เกินหนึ่งในสี่และต้องมีการความสัมพันธ์กับกลุ่มภาษานี้ต่อไป

หลายภาษาในเกาะโฟลเร็ซและเกาะใกล้เคียงโดยเฉพาะเกาะซาวู เคยถูกจัดเป็นภาษาในตระกูลออสโตรนีเซียน แต่มีคำศัพท์พื้นฐานที่ไม่อยู่ในตระกูลออสโตรนีเซียนจำนวนมาก ซึ่งอาจเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการยืมคำระหว่างกัน
