ผู้ติดเชื้อรายแรกได้รับการยืนยันในวันที่ 23 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2563 โดยผลการทดสอบเบื้องต้นให้ผลเป็นบวกในบุคคลผู้หนึ่งซึ่งอายุ 53 ปี และยังมีผู้ต้องสงสัยอีก 28 รายเป็นผลมาจากการทดสอบที่ยกระดับขึ้น มาตรการชายแดนนั้นรัดกุมขึ้น พร้อมการขยายมาตรการจุดตรวจทั้งทางบกทางทะเลตั้งแต่วันถัดไป<ref name="Update23Jan"/>
