ในการประชุมคณะกรรมการมรดกโลกสมัยสามัญครั้งที่ 38 พ.ศ. 2557 ณ กรุงโดฮา ประเทศ[[กาตาร์]] มีมติให้ขึ้นทะเบียนเส้นทางสายไหมใน[[จีน]] [[คาซัคสถาน]] และ[[คีร์กีซสถาน]] เป็น[[มรดกโลก]]ภายใต้ชื่อ '''เส้นทางสายไหม : โครงข่ายเส้นทางฉนวนฉางอาน-เทียนชาน''' โดยให้เหตุผลว่า เส้นทางนี้เป็นที่ยอมรับกันว่ามรดกทางอารยธรรของมนุษยชาติ ในฐานะเป็นเส้นทางโบราณในการติดต่อค้าขายและสื่อสารระหว่างตะวันออกกับตะวันตก
