สี จิ้นผิงเป็นเลขาธิการคนแรกที่เกิดหลัง[[สงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง]] เป็นบุตรของทหารผ่านศึกคอมมิวนิสต์จีน สี จงชุน สีขยับตำแหน่งทางการเมืองในมณฑลฝั่งทะเลของจีน สีเป็นผู้ว่าการ[[มณฑลฝูเจี้ยน]]ตั้งแต่ปี 2542 ถึง 2545 และผู้ว่าการ ซึ่งขณะนั้นเป็นตำแหน่งเลขาธิการพรรคของ[[มณฑลเจ้อเจียง]]ตั้งแต่ปี 2545 ถึง 2550 หลังการปลดเฉิน เหลียงยฺหวี่ สีถูกโอนไปเซี่ยงไฮ้เป็นเลขาธิการพรรคช่วงสั้น ๆ ในปี 2550 สีเข้าร่วมคณะกรรมาธิการสามัญประจำสภาคณะกรรมการบริหารสูงสุดและสำนักเลขาธิการกลางในเดือนตุลาคม 2550 ใช้เวลาอีกห้าปีเป็นผู้สืบทอดของ[[หู จิ่นเทา]] สีเป็นรองประธานาธิบดีตั้งแต่ปี 2551 ถึง 2556 และรองประธานคณะกรรมการกลางทหารส่วนกลางตั้งแต่ปี 2553 ถึง 2555
