San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, eastern portion. Cantilever bridge span, view from Yerba Buena island. There are additional truss spans seen beyond the cantilever portion.
When constructing this type the bridge is brought out from each tower, carefully maintaining balance until the anchorage at each extreme end is reached. There will still remain a central gap which is usually filled by lifting a prefabricated truss into position.
This particular structure is not believed capable of withstanding a likely future large earthquake and so a more modern structure has been built to replace this portion.
