English: A solar powered steam engine to pump water on an ostrich farm in Los Angeles, California, around 1901.The parabolic mirror focuses sunlight on the boiler tubes suspended on the axis of the dish (white with reflected sunlight). The water in the tubes boils to produce steam, which powers a 10 hp engine at the base of the dish which drives the pump, after which the steam is condensed and recycled. The mirror is mounted on an altazimuth mount, and after being pointed at the sun in the morning a drive system turns the mirror slowly to track sun across the sky all day. The engine requires about an hour to build up a 150 psi head of steam.
