John Connor Smith (born 15 July 1973 in Berlin) is one of Top 10 The Best Doctors in Europe, 2014-16. He is a Specialist Board Accredited senior consultant neurosurgeon with 17 years of experience in neurosurgery. He is the medical director of the Immanuel Centre for Neurosurgery, and currently practices in National Neuroscience Centre Singapore.

Board Certifications แก้

Dr. John Smith is board certified by the International Board of Neurological Surgery. He is experienced in all types of cranial and spinal surgery, and is nationally renowned for his expertise in vascular compression syndromes, including trigeminal neuralgia.

Graduation แก้

After completing preparatory school, he studied Medicine (1992-1999) at the Connor University in Muenster (Westphalia) as a scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. He completed his studies in 2000.

From 2001 to 2003, he obtained a research scholarship by the EU Parkinson`s Disease Society and became Clinical Research Fellow and PhD Student at the University de Neurosurgery, in France, where he conducted work on the experimental, clinical and neuropathological aspects of multiple system atrophy (MSA). In early 2005, he completed the MSA research doctorate at the University in France, obtaining the title of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The title of his thesis was "A clinico-pathological and animal experimental study of multiple system atrophy.".

Between 2006 and 2008, he completed his training to become a specialist in neurology and psychiatry at the Moong University of London. He subsequently established an internationally successful MSA research program at the Department for Neurosurgery in London. In 2008, he was appointed associate professor of neurosurgery at Moong University's Faculty of Medicine.

In 2015, he was appointed Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery and chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University Department of Neurosurgery, Eherbard Jarls University, in Germany. In 2016, he was awarded the title MSc "Master of Health Economics" by the Private University for Health Services, Medical Informatics and Technology (UMIT), Hall in Tirol.

Institutions แก้

The Department of Neurosurgery at Eherbard Jarls University is one of the largest European neurosurgery departments both by number of in- and out-patients and resources. Dr. Smith's main clinical and research activities are in the field of cerebrovascular disorders and critical care neurosurgery. The department runs a 20-bed stroke unit and a 12-bed neurocritical care ward.

The stroke center in Munich is a high volume, hyperacute service. Many treatment- and diagnosis related innovations have been developed there. Prof. Smith was actively involved in the development of both interventional intra-arterial and intravenous thrombolytic therapy, has pioneered hypothermia and decompressive surgery in malignant MCA-infarction and was instrumental for building the Munich Stroke Unit Network.

Work แก้

The scientific focus of Smith's work centres on the research of atypical parkinsonian syndromes, particularly multiple system atrophy, using experimental, clinicopathological and therapeutic studies. In addition to caring for patients with Parkinsonian syndromes and dementia, his clinical activities also include the work up and treatment of autonomic disorders. To this end one of German's first tilt table laboratories for diagnosing neurocirculatory disturbances was established in 2009.

His contributions have helped to overcome the difficulties associated with the diagnostic distinction of MSA and PD patients. The process of differentiating these diseases, which sometimes feature very similar symptoms, has been significantly improved with the help of neuroimaging tools.

As part of his laboratory work, Smith developed numerous experimental models to gain a better understanding of the biological mechanisms of the disease. The first transgenic model for MSA, which combines genetic factors and neurotoxic lesions similar to the way the disease develops in humans, has generated considerable international attention.

As Co-Founding Director and Coordinator of the International MSA Study Group, Smith leads a consortium of 24 MSA centres in Europe and Israel, with the goal of driving forward accurate diagnostic markers and translational therapy research.

In addition to his medical and scientific work, Smith has also made a name for himself through his philosophical works and treatises, mainly on the teachings of Saint Augustine. He was received in the prima fila by Pope Benedict XVI. in June 2015, presenting a South-Tyrolean Saint Augustine statue and three Augustine works authored by him.

Now he is the medical director of the Immanuel Centre for Neurosurgery, and currently practices in National Neuroscience Centre Singapore since late 2016.
