Background แก้

The Coin Museum, the second museum founded by the Treasury Department, is a three-storey building, established to be a learning center among cultural tourist attractions in the Rattanakosin Island area. Its total area is 3,600 square meters. The permanent exhibitions in the museum display the Thai money evolution from the ancient times to present, which reflect economy, society and culture involving money of each age, and Thai coins and medals including exquisite commemorative coins from many countries. The museum is also a place for sharing coin knowledge among numismatists and general public and holding temporary exhibitions and activities about coins. The Coin Museum building was formerly the office of Bureau of Monetary Management. After considering the suitability of the Coin Museum location, the Treasury Department chose the former office of Bureau of Monetary Management Building and renovated it to be the Coin Museum Building. Presently, Bureau of Monetary Management permanently moves to Pathum Thani province. The Coin Museum conceives the Principle of Universal Design (UD) which incorporating the infrastructure and environmental design that fully maximizes the accessibility for all. It is the concept that aims to enhance the quality of life and promote the equality by bridging the gap of those who are elderlies, disabilities, long term patients with limited mobility and physically challenged persons. The development of infrastructure, utilities and services are designed to accommodate everyone with different social status. As a matter of facts, the Universal Design approach was taken in the consideration since the inception of the project.

Organizing Exhibitions แก้

Curating an exhibition plays a vital role for a museum to become a place for life learning experience. The museum’s exhibitions are organized with a careful consideration to meet the diversity of museum visitors as follows:

Designing the Physical Elements of Exhibitions

Designing the physical elements of the exhibition include Universal Design designing materials, spaces, blank spaces, distance, heights and other physical elements in order to ensure greater accessibility, sufficient space, and ease of use for visitors.



Exhibition Techniques

The museum adopts various exhibition techniques to help visitors achieving better learning experience in the museum as follow:

- Exhibit Description in Braille In order to assist visitors who are visually impaired, the Coin Museum provides exhibition summaries and descriptions for exhibits in Braille.


- Touchable Models Using touchable models in exhibitions is helpful for people with visual disability. Plus, the tangible experience of the models can also contribute to better learning experience for all groups of people.


- Games with Touchscreen Function A technique suitable for visitors with visual sensibility, for example, people without disabilities, children, people with hearing disabilities, people with motion disability. The facility is necessarily designed to be of a proper height for the use of people in wheelchair and children, to contain colours, sizes, and fonts that are suitable for visitors with colourblindness, senior visitors, and visitors who are visually impaired.


- Motion Pictures A technique suitable for visitors with visual sensibility, for example, people without disabilities, children, people with hearing disabilities, people with motion disability. It must be designed to have pace, clarity, and colouring that is suitable for visitors with colourblindness, senior visitors, and people with visual impairment. The facility must be installed of a height that ensures accessibility for wheelchair users as well as children.


- 3D Exhibitions A technique that offers multi-sensational experience, include touch, sound, and vision to all groups of visitors, include visitors without disabilities, children, senior visitors, and those with disabilities. Designing this type of exhibition must always ensure that there is an ample space.


Exhibitions in the Coin Museum แก้

The Coin Museum construction duration is divided into 2 phases. The first phase was open to public in November 2014, while the second phase is currently under construction. The first phase has permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions which are as follows:

♦ Permanent Exhibitions
“The Beginning of Currency Exhibition” displays the evolution of money with 4D animation technology screening on the 360 degree wall.

- “Primitive Money Exhibition” displays various kinds of medium around the world; for example, people of Yap Island used a huge size of currency with 4 meters in diameter called “Fae” and other parts of the world used seeds, cowries, salt or leather.


- “Commemoration Exhibition of HM King Mongkut, or King Rama IV” displays the history of the monetary reform of Thailand during HM King Mongkut. Round and flat coins were officially produced and used along Pod Duang. This reign is regarded as the beginning period of using modern coins in Thailand.



♦ Temporary Exhibitions “Commemoration Exhibition of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej” displays photos, videos about Thai people’s love and loyalty towards HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the royal projects, the royal guidance and the royal remarks. The exhibition has five parts which are as follows:

Part 1: “With Love and Loyalty Exhibition” displays photos of Thai people with their sorrowful expressions during HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s the royal funeral ceremony, videos telling about Thai people’s feelings towards the late King.

Part 2: “Always in the Heart of Thai People Exhibition” displays HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s nine important stories telling towards nine commemorative coins and medals. These coins reflect Thai people’s gratitude towards HM the King’s life-long dedication for his people’s happiness. The stories are as follows:
- “The Royal Coronation Ceremony” displays a picture of a Royal Coronation Commemorative Medal with Ribbon in 1950.
- “The Defender of All Religious Faiths” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin on the Occasion of the Royal Merit Making at Wat Bowonniwet Vihara Temple in 1965.
- “The Royal Prestige Is Internationally Praised” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin on the Royal Visit to Thailand in 1961.
- “The Royal Couple of the Kingdom” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin on the Golden Jubilee of Their Majesties’ Wedding.
- “The Supreme Athlete and Artist” displays a picture of a Commemorative Medal on the Occasion of 13th Asian Games.
- “Soil Revival for Happy Lives of the People” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin Issued to Honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Being Presented the “Humanitarian Soil Scientist” Award by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2015.
- “The King Who Devoted to Development” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin Issued in Honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Being Conferred “The UNDP Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2006.
- “Royal Innovations for Development of Thailand” display a picture of a WIPO Award Commemorative Coin to Honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Being Conferred the 2006 Global Leaders Award on Intellectual Property by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

- “The Father of Water Resources” displays a picture of a Commemorative Coin on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Royal Rain Making.

Part 3: “The Royal Projects Exhibition” displays information about the royal projects initiated by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej which are as follows:
- The Royal Rainmaking Project was initiated on November 14, 1955.
- Project to Produce Palm Oil-Based Biodiesel was initiated in 1961.
- Soil Bully Project was initiated 1984.
- The Chaipattana Aerator was initiated on December 24, 1988.
- The Royally Initiated Vetiver Grass Project was initiated in 1991.
- The Royal Foundation was registered as the juristic person in 1992.
- The New Agriculture Theory was initiated in 1994.
- The Royal Kaem Ling Flood Control Project was initiated in 1995.

- The Royally-Initiated Chang Hua Man Project was initiated on July 13, 2009.

Part 4: “Father’s Teaching Exhibition” displays the royal guidance and the royal speech of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.


Part 5: “Following in the Virtuous Royal Footsteps Exhibition” displays the royal speech of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn concerning about HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s royal duties.



Museum Services and Facilities แก้

Both services and facilities in the museum contribute to visitors learning experience and enjoyment of the museum. Besides, the museum as a space for public use must provide facilities and services to comply with The Ministerial Order Regarding Indoor Facilities for Disabled People and The Elderly enacted in 2005, and The Ministerial Order Regarding Types or The Installment of Equipment, Facilities, and Services in Buildings, Areas, or Other Public Services to Ensure Accessibility for People with Disabilities which was enacted in 2012. According to the museum’s compliance to both aforementioned regulations, museum services and facilities were organized as follows:

Museum Facilities
- Accessible Toilets

Toilets are prepared to suit the needs of visitors with disabilities. Ramps with appropriate slope and width have been installed. The size of the room and the width of the door are designed especially to accommodate wheelchair users.


- Ramps

Ramps with appropriate height and width have been installed at the entrance of the museum as well as exhibition rooms, ensuring accessibility for visitors in wheelchairs.


- Reception

There is a reception point dedicated to visitors with disabilities in the reception area. The height, the width, as well as the depth of the facility are designed especially for the convenience of wheelchair users.


- Disabled Persons Parking Space

There is a dedicated parking space for visitors with disabilities in the front of the museum building, near the entrance and the ramp access. It has been designed to be of appropriate size, and sufficiently available. It is clearly marked, and aimed to facilitate visitors of different types of disabilities.


- Wheelchair Service and First Aid Room

At the museum, there is a first aid room, and there are wheelchairs available for all groups of visitors in case of emergencies.


Services by Staff
Museum staffs have received trainings with the aim to attend to different groups of visitors, include general people without special needs, children, senior visitors, and visitors with disabilities. One of the trainings is basic sign language. Moreover, it is made sure that there are always sufficient staffs in the museum for the convenience of all visitors.



Opening Hours แก้

Open every day (except Mondays) at 10.00 – 18.00 hrs.
The first round starts at 10.00 hrs. , and the final round starts at 17.00 hrs.
Each round limits 20 people.
