สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีซัลมาน พระชนมพรรษา 79 พรรษา เสด็จขึ้นครองราชย์ หลังการเสด็จสวรรคตของสมเด็จพระบรมเชษฐาธิราช เมื่อวันที่ 23 มกราคม 2015 ซึ่งการขึ้นครองราชย์ทำให้พระองค์ต้องดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อารักขามัสยิดศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทั้งสองอีกด้วย
