Rajaraja Chola I (Tamil: இராஜராஜ சோழன்) is one of the greatest kings of the Chola Empire, who ruled between 985 and 1014 CE. He laid the foundation for the growth of the Chola empire, by conquering the kingdoms of southern India and the Chola Empire expanded as far as Sri Lanka in the south, and Kalinga (Orissa) in the northeast. He fought many battles with the Western Chalukyas in the north, the Cheras and Pandyas in the south. He invaded Sri Lanka and started a century-long Chola occupation of the island. His undefeated reign and his son the great Rajendra Chola I's unparalleled military conquests brought considerable strength and power enabling the Chola kingdom to last for more than four centuries. The achievements of Raja Raja and his son Rajendra were savoured and nurtured for a long time by their worthy successors to the Chola throne.
