เพลงสมัยนิยม

เพลงสมัยนิยม (อังกฤษ: Popular music) เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจำนวนแนวเพลงต่าง ๆ ที่ได้รับความสนใจอย่างกว้างขวาง[1][2] และมักจะมีการกระจายให้กับผู้ชมที่มีขนาดใหญ่ผ่านทางอุตสาหกรรมเพลง เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับดนตรีศิลปะ[3][4][5] และดนตรีพื้นบ้าน ซึ่งได้รับการเผยแพร่ตัวอย่างในทางวิชาการ หรือ สอบสัมภาษณ์จากกลุ่มย่อยจากผู้ชมในท้องถิ่น[3][4][5] การใช้คำ Popular แต่เดิมมาจากสมัย ทิม แพน แอลลี (Tin Pan Alley) ในทศวรรษ 1880 ในสหรัฐอเมริกา[1] ถึงแม้ว่าเพลงสมัยนิยมในบางครั้งจะเป็นที่รู้จักใน "เพลงป็อป" (Pop music) สองคำจะไม่สามารถสับเปลี่ยนกันได้ คำว่า Popular music เป็นคำทั่วไปสำหรับเสียงดนตรี ทุกเพศทุกวัย ที่ดึงดูดให้รสนิยมได้เป็นที่นิยม[6] แต่ทว่าเพลงป็อปมักจะอ้างถึงแนวเพลงเป็นพิเศษ
