ประวัติศาสตร์ที่เก่าที่สุดของสต็อกโฮล์ม เริ่มที่ ค.ศ. 1252 โดยสต็อกโฮล์มเป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางในการค้าขายแลกเปลี่ยนแร่เหล็กจากเหมืองใกล้เคียง สต็อกโฮล์มก่อตั้งเป็นเมืองที่อยู่อาศัยเต็มรูปแบบเพื่อปกป้องตัวเองจากนักเดินเรือต่างถิ่น สต็อกโฮล์มเป็นเมืองหลวงของจักรวรรดิสวีเดนอย่างเป็นทางการในปี ค.ศ. 1634
