[[สกุลปลาทู|ปลาทู]]ก็อยู่ในวงศ์ Scombridae ดังนั้นจึงจัดเป็นปลาแมกเคอเรลเช่นกัน ส่วน[[ปลาซาร์ดีน]]อยู่ในวงศ์ [[Clupeidae]] ที่มีขนาดเล็กกว่า จึงไม่จัดเป็นปลาแมกเคอเรล
ปลาอาจอยู่แยกเป็นกลุ่มต่าง ๆ แบ่งโดยภูมิประเทศ
ปลาบางส่วนอพยพเป็นฝูงใหญ่ไปตามชายฝั่งเพื่อหาที่วางไข่อันเหมาะสมในน้ำค่อนข้างตื้น
หลังวางไข่แล้ว ปลาก็จะกลับไปตามทางที่ตนมาโดยเป็นกลุ่มเล็กลงไปยังที่หาอาหาร บ่อยครั้งใกล้ ๆ กับบริเวณน้ำผุดขึ้น (upwelling)
จากที่นั้น ปลาอาจจะย้ายไปดยู่นอกฝั่งในน้ำลึกกว่าแล้วใช้เวลาในฤดูหนาวโดยไม่ค่อยทำอะไร

ปลาแมกเคอเรลโดยมากอยู่ในวงศ์ปลาอินทรี โดยปลาทูน่าและปลาโบนิโต (bonito, ปลาเผ่า Sardini) ก็รวมอยู่ในวงศ์ด้วย
โดยทั่วไปแล้ว ปลาแมกเคอเรลจะเล็กและบางกว่าปลาทูน่า แต่มีลักษณะอื่น ๆ ที่คล้าย ๆ กัน
ถ้ามีเกล็ด ก็จะเล็กมาก
เหมือนกับปลาทูน่าและโบนิโต ปลาแมกเคอเรลกินจุมาก สามารถว่ายน้ำได้เร็วและคล่องแคล่ว สามารถทำให้ตัวเพรียวโดยหดครีบเข้าไปในร่องตามตัว
เหมือนกับปลาอินทรีอื่น ๆ ตัวเป็นรูปทรงกระบอก มีครีบเล็ก ๆ ตามหลังและท้องโดยอยู่หลังครีบหลัง (dorsal fin) และครีบก้น (anal fin) แต่ไม่เหมือนกับปลาทูน่าที่ใหญ่กว่า ครีบเหล่านี้ค่อนข้างบาง<ref name=FAOTuna />
