โดยประวัติศาสตร์แล้ว นครรัฐมักจะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพื้นที่ทางวัฒนธรรมที่ใหญ่กว่า ดังเช่นนครรัฐใน[[กรีก]]โบราณ (เช่น [[เอเธนส์]] [[สปาร์ตา]] และ[[โครินธ์]]) เมืองในเอเชียกลางตามเส้นทางสายไหม นครรัฐในอิตาลีเหนือ (โดยเฉพาะ [[ฟลอเรนซ์]]และ[[เวนิซ]])
