ชื่อนี้มาจาก[[ภาษาเยอรมัน]]ว่า ''บิโอเคมี'' (Biochemie) ซึ่งแรกตั้งโดย ฮอปเปอ-ซีเลอร์ (Hoppe-Sieler) ในปี [[พ.ศ. 2420]] (ค.ศ. 1877) โดยเขาให้คำจำกัดความไว้เป็นอย่างดีว่า เป็นเนื้อหาวิชาซึ่งครอบคลุมการเข้าศึกษาชีววิทยาในเชิงโมเลกุลทุกๆ ด้าน
