บริสตอล เป็นเมืองที่อยู่ในทางภาคตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศอังกฤษ โดยมีประชากรในเขตตัวเมืองประมาณ 433,100 ตนกับประชากรในแถบชานเมืองอยู่ 1,070,000 คน เป็นเมืองที่ประชากรมากที่สุดในอันดับ 6 ของอังกฤษและอันดับแปดของสหราชอาณาจักร โดยเมืองบริสตอลเป็นหนึ่งในเมืองหลักของอังกฤษตะวันตกเฉียงใต้
เมืองบริสตอลได้รับกฎบัตรรอยัลในปี คศ. 1155 และได้รับสถานะเป็น เมืองแบบเคาร์ตี้ในปี 1373
