ภาษาคากัสแบ่งได้เป็นหลายสำเนียงตามเผ่าย่อยต่างๆ หลักฐานการศึกษาภาษาคากัสเริ่มเมื่อราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24 โดยนักภาษาศาสตร์ชาวฟินแลนด์ Matthias Castren ผู้ที่เดินทางไปในเอเชียตอนเหนือและตอนกลางระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2388 – 2392 และ Wilhelm Radloff ผู้เดินทางไปในไซบีเรียตอนใต้ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2402 – 2413 ซึ่งทำให้ได้ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับภาษาคากัสจำนวนหนึ่ง
== ระบบการเขียน ==
ภาษาคากัสที่ใช้ในการเขียนเริ่มพัฒนาหลังจาก[[การปฏิวัติรัสเซีย]] พ.ศ. 2460 โดยมีพื้นฐานมาจากสำเนียงซากายและกาซา ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2467 ภาษาคากัสเขียนด้วย[[อักษรซีริลลิก]] จากนั้นเปลี่ยนมาเขียนด้วย[[อักษรละติน]]เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2472 และเปลี่ยนมาเขียนด้วยอักษรซีริลลิกอีกครั้งเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2482
