ทาร์ทารัส

ในเทพปกรณัมกรีก ทาร์ทารัส (อังกฤษ: Tartarus, /ˈtɑːrtərəs/; กรีกโบราณ: Τάρταρος, Tártaros) เป็นเหวลึกที่ใช้เป็นคุกใต้ดินสำหรับทรมานและลงโทษคนทำชั่วและเป็นคุกสำหรับพวกไททัน ทาร์ทารัสเป็นสถานที่ที่เพลโตกล่าวไว้ใน กอร์จิอัส (ป. 400 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราช) ว่าเป็นบริเวณที่วิญญาณถูกตัดสินหลังความตาย และคนชั่วจะได้รับบทลงโทษ ทาร์ทารัสยังถือเป็นพลังดั้งเดิม (primordial force) หรือเทพร่วมกับสิ่งที่เป็นรูปธรรมอื่น ๆ เช่นโลก, กลางคืน และเวลา

ใน Theogony (ป. ปลายศตวรรษที่ 8 ก่อนคริสต์ศักราช) ของเฮสิโอด นักกวีชาวกรีก ทาร์ทารัสเป็นเทพบรรพกาลที่สาม ซึ่งเกิดหลังจากเคออสกับไกอา (โลก) และมีมาก่อนเอียรอส และเป็นบิดาของปีศาจไทฟอน ส่วนHyginusรายงานว่า ทาร์ทารัสเป็นบุตรของAetherกับไกอา

ที่ตั้ง

เฮสิโอสกล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสในฐานะสถานที่ว่า ทั่งทองแดงที่ตกจากสวรรค์จะใช้เวลาเก้าวันก่อนถึงพื้นโลก และทั่งนั้นจะใช้เวลาอีกเก้าวันจากพื้นโลกถึงทาร์ทารัส ในอีเลียด (ป. ศตวรรษที่ 8 ก่อนคริสต์ศักราช) ซุสกล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสว่า "อยู่ใต้เฮดีส ซึ่งไกลพอ ๆ กับระยะห่างของสวรรค์เหนือโลก" เช่นเดียวกันกับรายงานของApollodorusที่กล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสไว้เป็น "สถานที่อันมืดมนในเฮดีสที่ไกลจากโลกพอ ๆ กับระยะห่างของโลกกับสวรรค์"
