ทวีป
ทวีป หมายถึง แผ่นดินขนาดใหญ่ที่เชื่อมต่อกันบนพื้นโลก การแบ่งทวีปในโลกไม่มีมาตรฐานที่แน่นอน โดยทั่วไปทวีป ต้องเป็นพื้นกว้างใหญ่ ไม่รวมพื้นที่ที่จมอยู่ใต้น้ำ และมีเขตแดนเด่นชัดทางภูมิศาสตร์

- แบบจำลองเจ็ดทวีปโดยทั่วไปสอนในจีน อินเดีย ยุโรปตะวันตกบางส่วนและประเทศที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษส่วนมาก
- ในส่วนใหญ่จะนับว่ามี 6 ทวีปคือ อเมริกา เอเซีย ยุโรป แอฟริกา ออสเตรเลีย และ แอนตาร์กติกา
- แบบจำลองหกทวีป (มีทวีปอเมริกา) ใช้ในประเทศที่พูดภาษาสเปน[12] และบางส่วนของยุโรป รวมถึงประเทศกรีซ (แบบจำลอง 5 ทวีปที่มีมนุษย์อาศัย คือ ไม่รวมแอนตาร์กติกา ยังพบในแบบเรียน) [5]
เราอาจรวมทวีปเป็น มหาทวีป (supercontinent) หรือแบ่งย่อยเป็น อนุทวีป (subcontinent) ก็ได้ แต่ก็ไม่มีนิยามที่แน่นอนชัดเจนเช่นกัน
ในอังกฤษ คำว่า "the Continent" มักหมายถึงทวีปยุโรป โดยไม่รวมบริเตนใหญ่กับไอร์แลนด์ เช่นเดียวกัน คำว่า "the Subcontinent" มักหมายถึง ประเทศอินเดีย
ทวีปทางภูมิศาสตร์ แก้
ในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 นักภูมิศาสตร์ยอมรับกันว่าทวีปต่าง ๆ มีการเคลื่อนที่ไปบนผิวโลกอยู่เสมอ เรียกกระบวนการนี้ว่า "ทวีปเลื่อน (continental drift)" อธิบายได้ด้วยทฤษฎีการเคลื่อนที่ของแผ่นเปลือกโลก (plate tectonics)
ปัจจุบันผิวโลกมีแผ่นเปลือกโลกหลักอยู่ 7 แผ่น และแผ่นเล็ก ๆ อีกมาก การเคลื่อนที่ของแผ่นเปลือกโลกทำให้เกิดการแยกตัวออกจากกัน และการรวมเข้าด้วยกันของแต่ละแผ่น ในอดีตจึงมีแผ่นเปลือกที่ไม่พบในปัจจุบัน
