The Kimbell painting is an earlier version of the same subject, painted in 1819; the artist made susbstantial modifications in the 1825 version. This was the last painting by the artist and finished (in French), at the artist's direction, by his Belgian pupil Michel Stapleaux, when the artist was confined to his bed.
