สิทธิ คือ หลักเสรีภาพหรือการให้สิทธิ์ทางกฎหมาย สังคมหรือจริยศาสตร์ นั่นคือ สิทธิเป็นกฎเชิงบรรทัดฐานพื้นฐานเกี่ยวกับสิ่งที่ประชาชนมีหรือเป็นของประชาชนตามบางระบบกฎหมาย ขนบธรรมเนียมทางสังคม หรือทฤษฎีจริยศาสตร์ สิทธิมีความสำคัญยิ่งในสาขาวิชาดังกล่าว เช่น กฎหมายและจริยศาสตร์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งทฤษฎีความยุติธรรมและกรณียกรรม

มักถือว่าสิทธิเป็นพื้นฐานของอารยธรรม ถือว่าเป็นเสาหลักซึ่งเป็นที่ยอมรับของสังคมและวัฒนธรรม[1] และประวัติศาสตร์ความขัดแย้งทางสังคมพบได้ในประวัติศาสตร์ของสิทธิแต่ละอย่างและพัฒนาการของมัน ตามสารานุกรมปรัชญาสแตนฟอร์ด "สิทธิให้โครงสร้างแก่ระบอบการปกครอง เนื้อหากฎหมาย และลักษณะของศีลธรรมซึ่งรับรู้ในปัจจุบัน"[2]
