 รายชื่อหนัวสือนี้มาจาก The Big Read ของบีบีซี ซึ่งเป็นผลจากการบสำรวจการอ่านหนังสือในสหราชอาณาจักรใน ปี พ. ศ. 2546 (ค.ศ. 2003) จากการโหวตของผู้รักการอ่านชาวอังกฤษมากกว่า 7.5 แสนคน เพื่อจัดทำรายชื่อนวนิยายที่มีคนรักตลอดกาลมากที่สุด [1][2]  การสำรวจใช้เวลายาวนานตลอดทั้งปีในการค้นหารสนิยมของการอ่านโดยวิธีสำรวจสาธารณะครั้งใหญ่ที่สุด [3] และสะสมข้อมูลจนถึงปัจจุบัน การจัดทำรายชื่อนี้ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากหลายโปรแกรมที่มีบุคคลดีเด่นเป็นเจ้าภาพแนะนำสนับสนุนหนังสือโปรดของตนด้วย[4]

จุดประสงค์ แก้

บีบีซีเริ่ม The Big Read โดยมีเป้าหมายของการค้นหา "นวนิยายที่เป็นที่รักมากที่สุด" โดยวิธีการโหวตทางเว็บไซต์, SMS และโทรศัพท์ การแสดงนี้มีข้อโต้แย้ง บีบีซีถูกกล่าวหาว่าใช้วิธีการของ sensationalist กระตุ้นความรู้สึกกับวรรณกรรม แต่ผู้สนับสนุนก็ยกย่องในเรื่องของยกระดับการอ่่่านสาธารณะ  ชาวอังกฤษลงคะแนนเสียงให้กับนวนิยายเรื่องแรกที่พวกเขาปรารถนา [5] จากรายชื่อนวนิยาย 200 ชื่อ ถูกจัดทำขึ้นโดยมีอันดับสูงสุด 21 อันดับ แล้วนำไปโหวตต่อโดยมีเงื่อนไขว่ามีเพียงหนังสือเดียวต่อผู้แต่งเท่านั้นอยู่ในท๊อป 21 เนื่องจากการสำรวจนี้เลือกเฉพาะประเภท นวนิยาย จึงไม่รวมบทละครของวิลเลียม เช็คสเปียร์
